Austin - Farm to work: Brings farmer’s market to worksites

Challenges overcome/ lessons learned to promote PA

Challenges and Lessons: Keeping People Involved

Consider how to promote new membership, sustainability, involvement? Good initial turnout-but then 10-15% drop out. At (wellness?) clinics. Support from the top down to make strategies possible

(Zetta Garnett, Travis County wellness specialist)

How to keep people from dropping out, even when they are given incentives to stay in.

Work is a big barrier to keep people from PA

Demographics affect if people are going to go out

Limitations for teachers’ wellness-responsibility to supervise kids from 7:30-4:00, no cultural wellness (Seguin)

Getting kids/parents involved together (Tatum)

Infrastructure Barriers/ Plans

Brownsville has trails but no sidewalks to get there.

Resistant to change; rail line going unused but city wants to put in toll road.

Would prefer trail; current trail not successful because they can’t get to it.

Sidewalk master plan – Austin, HHS to incorporate PH data

Lighting of trails can be an issue

Different components for setting up trails, etc. – recreational or commuting

Remove Barriers: Modify environment to make healthy choices easier (laws, safety)- people have got to have place to go, take away limitations

Lack of Resources

Funds

Grants from cities has helped

Limited resources for facilities management, cost

Department of Transportation—do they have grants for safe walks?? Yes-need more?

Sustainability

Funding for sustainability needed

With lack of funding, programs end. Focus should be on sustainable programs/ideas. Policy changes necessary to reach vulnerable populations. The mayor can have influence to determine how to provide structure to change health on a political level. (Kathy Shields, San Antonio)

Need sustainability movement

People

Don’t have enough time, need people who are committed and passionate to make it work

Challenge – people that want to be a part of a program but who don’t want to put in any time or money- require commitments from organizations

Space

Ferris High School is out of town and city had no funding for sidewalks

Availability to low SES (Tatum Rebelle)

Creating Measureable Outcomes/ Evaluation

How do we demonstrate measurable outcomes? Need statewide effort for evaluation.

Knowing where to spend the money to get the most out of it can be a problem.

Lessons Learned - Survey community

Get data – surveys- help you get a better picture and allow you to present a case for PA, this is helpful for getting grants and funding

Lessons Learned – Collaboration

Just get started, join forces with people

CAN DO program – had to set It up so it was a win for every department involved

Built Env - collaborate with those we don’t normally

Lessons Learned – Increasing Consumer Awareness

Bicycle awareness-that you are allowed to ride on sidewalks

When creating trails, etc., forewarn neighborhood with big signs

Dissemination through multiple networks

Culture of wellness in schools and other venues: signs about nutrition, signs about physical activity; CDC stairwell signs

Waco – state trails conference next week; database of trails at texastrails.org; can be used for marketing in city

Small communities have trouble getting info out

Barrier: Government

San Antonio - Suggested policy changes for a local government.

Themes – built environment and various projects that had a goal/kick off event to use the built environment; bridging the gap with partners we use; gov’t not always willing to help but private sector has the funds

PA and Nutrition – Equity Items

Need to create opportunities for physical activity and fruits and vegetables, consider these equity items.

Grocery stores vs fast food on GIS in low SES, what opportunities can create for farmer’s markets, collective food gardens in city-owned unused land; broaden vision

PA and Nutrition

  • PA and food together is important

  • Edible Austin policy board in Austin has goal of making healthy, locally grown food available to schools. The board is interested in partnering with other groups in the state to meet these goals.

  • Increase PA, improve nutrition in school, worksites, community

  • Allows for removal of unhealthy practices – i.e. unhealthy foods in hospital café, soda vending machine contracts

National Planning Conference – built environment hot topic 2 years ago

Houston – also try to include a holistic wellness approach

State/nation in trouble-negative legacy to leave

You can get a ticket for speeding, what about bad health habits?

Health is economics

TRAPS-TML (???)
